Mrs. Edna Matthews was found dead in bed at the home of Rev. Hugh McCalip, at New Market, last Friday. a box of "Rough on Rats" was found by her side. She was a widow and had lived with Rev. McCalip for some years. - kbz

New Market, Ind Oct 6, 1899 – I write to correct the account in last week’s Journal regarding the death of Mrs. Edna Matthews. The facts are these: Mrs. Matthews had lived about 18 months in the home of Rev. Hugh McCalip as a domestic. On Thursday evening when Mr. and Mrs. McCalip returned home from the fair they found Mrs. Matthews very sick. They at once summoned a physician, who pronounced it a case of poisoning. Mrs. Stout stoutly denied having taken anything except a dose of Garfield tea. However, the following Monday she confessed to having taken a teaspoonful of Rough on Rats. She lingered for 15 days and died from an inflammation of stomach and bowels, resulting from the action of the poison – Dr. CH Walden. —kbz

Thursday Sept 28 at 4 o’clock. Rev. Hugh McCalip at New Market, found Mrs. Edna Matthews dead in bed. A box of “Rough on Rats” was found near the bed and it is supposed that she committed suicide by taking this poison. Mrs. Matthews was a widow and had lived with Mr. McCalip and wife for several years since a separation from her husband but has been in poor health of late and has showed signs of an unbalanced mind. This condition is supposed to be the cause of her taking her own life. The body was taken to her former home at Wolcott Friday afternoon for burial - kbz
NOTE: The only Edna (Berry) Matthews in Indiana buried in 1899 is Edna Berry buried Wolcott, in White County. This one was born Dec 21, 1851 (which would make her 47 - as the one above is on her Death Record Bk 3, p 34 Montgomery County). The one in the cemetery died Sept 27, 1899 according to the tombstone - 28th on the death record and the 29th as per above "last Friday". Still think it is the same person. HOWEVER, the big question is: It says she is a widow but the lady Edna Berry Matthews in the Wolcott Cemetery was married to George A. Matthews whose dates are 1848-1931 so he would be living. VERY Interesting - confusing and all the above. ANYONE know it'd be GREAT -- Rev. McCalip's wife was also born in Ohio as is the Edna Berry Matthews -- Hugh McCalip's wife was Samantha Terry daughter of Daniel Terry -- wonder if Edna is Terry or Samantha a Berry -- just all too close not to be here - HELP
NOTE: The last obit I found is the first above - said buried in Illinois but don't find one on findagrave so Edna is STILL a mystery
